Brief History

Originally Bowling Mission, Bowling Baptist Cricket Club have been constant members (with the exception of the years 1939-1948) of the Bradford Mutual Sunday School Cricket League (BMSSCL) since 1923. As the name suggests the League was developed around the many Methodist, United Reform & other Churches in the late 1800's, early 1900's. More details on the history of the league can be found below:

The Bowling Baptist Church closed some years ago. The club also had its own ground adjacent to Sticker Lane in Bradford not far from the Bowling Mission. This was sold some time ago and for many years home games were played at Yorkshire Martyrs School ground on Tong Street however due to development of a new school this was built on ! For two years we ground shared with Cross Roads-Daisy Hill CC but since then have shared with Great Horton Methodist CC.

There are now only a small number of current League teams with direct links to local Churches and a quick look at the teams in the League today reflects the multicultural society that we now have in and around the Bradford District.

2011 Season

First off there are a good number of people who need to be thanked for the efforts in taking the club forward through last years (2010) season and continuing their efforts through the current one - without wishing to cause offence to those not named notable thanks need to go to the likes of Kasim, Craig, Ahktar and Gaz. Mention also needs to be made of Chris (Treasurer), Jonathan (Sec) and Ray (Teas & fund raising) for all their hard work. Thanks chaps !

With several players hanging up their boots or wishing to spend a little more time doing other things on a Saturday in recent years the club and team has seen quite a few changes and new faces come along and take the club forward.

Our 98 run victory over second placed West Bowling in the penultimate game of the 2010 season saw us crowned Division C Champions however with the collapse of the Bradford Central League and several teams joing the BMSSCL from here this has seen in some slight restructuring of the league and we remain in Division C rather be promoted to Division B.

Results & Statistics

Links to this and previous seasons results and statistics can be found at the bottom of the page.

The 2011 sees the introduction of a new points system that increases the number of points for a straight win but also provides the opportunity of collecting bonus points depending upon the result. It's also a little more complicated to describe and work out but here goes for the basics (I think !):

Games in the BMSSCL start at 14:00 and consist of 40 Overs per team (Max).

  • Win - 25 Points
The team batting first Score n runs and then bowl the team batting second all out for less runs (a win by n Runs)........or......the Team batting second score more runs that the team that batted first (a win by n Wickets).

  • Winning Draw - 16 points plus any Bonus Points
The team batting first score n runs but the team batting second do not score the required total but yet are not all out !

  • Draw - 6 points plus any Bonus Points
Scores exactly level - doesn't happen very often !

  • Losing Draw - 4 points - possibly 5 plus any Bonus Points !
Reference Winning Draw above but the 4 points goes to the team batting second who do not reach the required total without being all out. As an incentive to chase 5 points are available if 75% of the required score is attained.

  • Defeat - Bonus points only
You bat first and score x runs. The team batting second reach the required target and score 1 or more runs........or........The team batting second are bowled all out for a lower total than the team that batted first.

  • Bonus points
Batting - Awarded to teams not gaining a win or winning draw
    75-99 runs = 1 point
    100-124 runs = 2 points
    125-149 runs = 3 points
    150-174 rus = 4 points
    175+ runs = 5 points Maximum

Bowling - Awarded to teams not gaining a win
    2-3 wickets = 1 point
    4-5 wickets = 2 points
    6-7 wickets = 3 points
    8-9 wickets = 4 points
10 wickets (or all out) = 5 points Maximum

  • Should a game be called off or not completed due to Weather 5 Points is awarded to each team.

    Simple !

  • The Laws and Spirit of Cricket from the MCC
  • description of the game for spectators from the Cricinfor website.......
  • ......the less detailed explanation goes something like:

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in.
Each man that's in goes out and when he's out, he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out.
When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in out.
When both sides have been in and out, including the not outs --- that's the end of the game.
